SHAWANO, WI- Hate speech has been a topic of conversation around the Shawano School District after a video of a student using hate speech was posted on social media. Superintendent Kurt Krizan sent an email to parents in the district.
I am writing today to ask for your support on two very serious topics. This week, we
have had three incidents where alcohol and drugs were brought into our buildings.
Our administration was notified by students of this concern and were able to quickly
determine the parties involved and confiscate the items.
In a separate incident, we were made aware of a social media post depicting hate
speech. Please know that we are taking this situation very seriously.
I am providing you with this information not only for transparency, but to ask for your
help. Please talk with your children about the dangers of alcohol and drugs.
Encourage them to talk with a trusted adult in our buildings. Our Pupil Services staff
have resources available to support our students through issues related to alcohol
and drugs.
As a school district, we do not and will not tolerate hate speech. Please help us in
sharing this message with your children.
I have stated it before, but want to reiterate that the safety of our staff and students is
our number one priority. Please partner with us to help ensure that our buildings are
a safe place to learn.
