SHAWANO, WI- A Shawano woman was in Shawano County Court Monday on child abuse charges.
39-year-old Lisa Gutenberger appeared with her attorney after being charged with Physical Abuse of A Child and Chronic Neglect of a Child.
The charges are connected to allegations of mistreatment that she and her husband Gabriel Gutenberger are accused of committing.
According to the criminal complaint, two children, a 15-year-old male, and a 13-year-old female were not receiving enough food, were neglected and the boy received physical abuse as a form of discipline.
The complaint alleges that the Gutenberger’s did not always give the children breakfast and made them do chores and punishments such as mowing the lawn by hand, weeding the garden, and running laps with little or no water. They said sometimes, food would be taken away as punishment, according to the complaint.
Doctors labeled the children as malnourished and their eating abilities have been impacted. According to the report, police on the scene labeled the children as skin and bones.
According to the report, the boy told police his father would hit him with his belt if he bent his knees while weeding the garden and both children told police that they were made to sleep on the floor and cameras and alarms were put in place to ensure that they did.
The children said they were not always allowed to eat with the rest of the family. They also told police they could only use the restroom at certain times in the day and when they did, they had to go at the same time with one waiting outside the door to ensure that they went before flushing.
The Gutenberger’s had six children living in the home and all have been removed from the home since the arrest.
Both Lisa and Gaberial Gutenberger were released last week on a $20,000 dollar signature bond. An 18-year-old male who lived in the home was also charged in the mistreatment investigation.
Both Gaberial and Lisa will be in court in October for a Preliminary Hearing.
