Raymond “Ray” Schmidt, age 95, of Split Rock passed away Saturday, March 7, 2020 at The Pines Post-Acute & Memory Care, Embarrass.
Raymond Paul Schmidt was born on December 11, 1924 in Split Rock to Frederick and Annetta (Nero) Schmidt. His first job was working at his brother Fritz’s meat market in Juneau. Then he entered the U.S. Army during WWII and served in Germany as a truck driver from 1942 – 1945. After the military, Ray started doing electrical work with his brother Roy. They did residential wiring all around the area for many years. By the mid 1970’s he was employed by Holm’s Service Station and Laundrymat in Tigerton until the late 1980’s.
Ray is a former member of Peace Lutheran Church, Split Rock. In his early days, he liked fishing and spending time outdoors. He especially enjoyed attending different County Fairs all around the state. Ray repaired televisions and radios; and was often inventing things like his electronic fly swatter. He also loved mathematics and was a true handyman who used his logic to fix just about anything.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Charlottle Schmidt of Juneau, and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, an infant Frances Schmidt and Helen Krueger; five brothers, Frederick, Harold, Junnie, Roy E., and Alvin Schmidt; one brother-in-law, John Krueger; and four sisters-in-law, Betty Lund, Carol Schmidt, Dorothy Schmidt, and Melly Schmidt. Ray was further preceded by six half-sisters, infant Martha Schmidt, Linda Westphal, Amanda Westphal, Doris Beyer, Clara Pautsch, and Bernice Latchford.
Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, July 11th at 11:00 AM at Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Split Rock, with Rev. Craig Nehring officiating. Military Honors will be provided at the cemetery by members of the American Legion Post 239, Tigerton. Beil-Didier Funeral Home, Tigerton, is assisting with the arrangements.
The family wishes to thank all the nurses and staff at The Pines for the compassionate and loving care given to Ray.
