City of Shawano officials met with the Shawano School Board and the public last night, talking about building a new community center. The proposed facility would be located next to Shawano Community High School. The school’s existing competition pool would remain intact, while the new facility would add a separate community pool area. The new center would also have a weight room, gymnasium, a walking track, racquetball courts, and other fitness options.
Park and Recreation Department Director Matt Hendricks says his department is sending the partnership agreement to the city council. The council will review the proposal during their May 8th meeting, and the school boards review will take place may 20th.
Hendricks says it’s important to evaluate the impact on both Shawano city residents as well those who are outside of the city but still in the school district. The estimated cost of a proposed joint city and school district recreation center was placed at anywhere from $24 million to $28 million.
