James R. Schroeder, age 91 of Appleton, formerly of Shawano, passed away on Monday, November 14, 2016 at ThedaCare Medical Center-Appleton.
Jim was born October 30, 1925 in Shawano, a son of the late Clarence and Mabel (Evans) Schroeder. He attended school in Shawano, graduating from Shawano High School in 1943. Following school, he entered the United States Army. Jim was stationed in the Philippines with the 789th Field Artillery Battalion Service Battery. He served his country for three years. Upon returning from service, he attended the Oshkosh Business College.
On May 5, 1951, Jim was united in marriage to the former Gladys Steinberg at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hortonville. Following their marriage the couple lived in Combined Locks. Jim was employed as an accountant at the Combined Locks Paper Mill from 1951 to 1959. He was appointed Postmaster of Combined Locks in 1959, a position he held until his retirement in 1987. Following his retirement, Jim and Gladys moved to Legend Lake, then to Shawano. In 2014 they moved to Appleton.
Jim is a member of St. Jakobi Lutheran Church, Town of Richmond, where he served as the President of the Congregation and was the finance secretary. He was a member of the Shawano 40 et 8, and was the Past Post Commander of the Shawano American Legion Post #117 and the Shawano VFW Post #2723. Jim enjoyed crossword and word find puzzles, reading Western novels, and hunting and fishing with his son.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Gladys Schroeder, of Appleton; his daughter, Kathleen Smith of Muskegon, MI; his son, Terry (Cathy) Schroeder of Neenah, WI; two grandchildren, Aaron and Nathan Smith; his sister, Phyllis Manning of Menasha, WI; and his brother, Clarence “Dunk” Schroeder of Waukesha, WI. Jim was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack and Dick Schroeder.
Funeral services for James R. Schroeder will be held on Friday, November 18, 2016 at 11:00 AM at St. Jakobi Lutheran Church, Town of Richmond. Pastor Travis Kleinschmidt will officiate. Interment will take place in the Parish Cemetery. Shawano AmVets Post #10 will conduct full military honors at the cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 10:00 AM until the hour of service. In lieu of flowers and plants the family prefers memorials to St. Jakobi Lutheran Church.
