SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano Hawks outhit Menasha but couldn’t capitalize late, falling 2-1 to the Bluejays in Bay Conference action Tuesday night.
Shawano tallied eight hits to Menasha’s four but struggled to string together timely offense, leaving eight runners on base. The Bluejays broke through with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth, while the Hawks answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Shawano had the bases loaded with two outs, but Anderson Schmidt’s line drive to third ended the rally.
The Hawks threatened again in the seventh, putting a runner on base, but their comeback hopes were dashed by a game-ending double play.
At the plate, Pete Bruette led Shawano with a 3-for-4 performance, while Jerzy Brocker went 2-for-3. Brocker also took the tough-luck loss on the mound, pitching 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, walking four, and striking out eight.
With the loss, Shawano falls to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the Bay Conference.
