SHAWANO, WI- As Green Bay prepares to host the 2025 NFL Draft from April 24-26, local leaders are pushing for state help to cover the rising safety costs — but officials in Shawano say they don’t plan to be part of the security effort.
State Reps. David Steffen (R-Howard) and Ben Franklin (R-De Pere) are asking for $1.25 million in the state budget to help fund public safety needs during the massive event, which is expected to bring an estimated $96 million in economic impact to the region. Most of the requested funding would go to agencies in Brown County, including the Ashwaubenon Public Safety Department, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Green Bay Police Department, and Green Bay Metro Fire Department.
However, Shawano Police Chief Michael Musolff said his department has not been asked to assist.
Similarly, Shawano County Sheriff George Lenzner confirmed that his deputies also will not be participating unless an emergency situation arises.
Despite concerns over the high cost of safety and services, Steffen noted that the state is expected to collect at least $4.5 million in sales tax revenue from the draft event.
