SHAWANO, Wis. — April marks National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Safe Haven in Shawano is using the time to raise awareness, support survivors, and educate the community.
According to Mindy Lohff, executive director of Safe Haven, sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes, but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
In 2024, Safe Haven provided shelter to 58 adults and 63 children. Their outreach extended far beyond the shelter walls, reaching 462 people through nearly 7,500 services.
Community Education and Awareness
Throughout April, Safe Haven hosts community events to both honor survivors and raise public awareness. One notable outreach included a presentation at Bonduel High School focused on the dangers of human trafficking, a form of sexual violence that often spikes during large events.
Teal ribbons, the signature color for sexual assault awareness — can be seen around Franklin Park and throughout Shawano. Larger ribbons were displayed with help from LACES (Leadership Achievement Community Engagement and Service), an organization that partners with Safe Haven on multiple initiatives.
