SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department has been officially certified as a Level II health department by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), receiving strong recognition for its commitment to public health and community well-being.
The certification was announced in a letter from the state health officer, Paula Tran, to Mike Wizner, chairman of the Shawano County Health and Veterans Service Committee. The letter, shared at the March 26 county board meeting, highlighted the department’s knowledge, skill, and dedication to improving health outcomes across the community.
Led by Health Officer and Director Nick Mau, who has held the position since June 2024, the department has been recognized for its effective leadership and experienced staff. Mau has been with the department since 2016 and oversees a team known for its dedication to public service and community care.
To qualify as a Level II health department, an agency must meet a range of standards. These include providing services in communicable and chronic disease prevention, environmental public health, maternal and child health, and facilitating access to clinical care. In addition, Level II departments are required to support workforce development, implement quality improvement initiatives, manage performance based on organizational goals, and incorporate public health nursing services.
County officials acknowledged the department’s work as exceptional, noting the consistent effort and dedication shown by the entire staff. The recognition marks a significant milestone for the Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department and underscores its vital role in promoting health and safety in the region.
