The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding ice anglers to remove their permanent ice shanties from state waters by the required deadlines. The removal schedule for 2024 is as follows:
- Wisconsin-Iowa boundary waters – February 20
- Wisconsin-Minnesota boundary waters – March 1
- Inland waters south of Highway 64 – March 2
- Wisconsin-Michigan boundary waters – March 15
- Lake Michigan, Green Bay, Lake Superior, and inland waters north of Highway 64 – March 16
While permanent shanties must be taken off the ice by these dates, portable shelters can still be used as long as they are removed when not in use. More details on shanty removal and fishing regulations can be found in the 2024-2025 Hook and Line Fishing Regulations Guide.
For anglers needing assistance, local fishing clubs, bait shops, and other community members may be able to help. Those who fail to remove their shanty can be reported to the DNR Violation Hotline at 1-800-TIP-WNDR (1-800-847-9367) via call or text.
The DNR also urges caution, as no ice is ever completely safe. Before attempting to remove a shanty, anglers should check with local bait shops or fishing clubs for the latest ice conditions, as the DNR does not monitor ice thickness.
