
Clyde C. Culbertson, age 83 of Clintonville, passed away unexpectedly Friday, February 7, 2025 due to complications following a medical procedure at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center, Appleton.
Clyde Curtis Culbertson was born August 7, 1941 in Appleton, WI son to the late Wayne & Hazel (Meltz) Culbertson. He attended Appleton West High School graduating with the class of 1960. After enlisting in the Naval Air Force Division, a branch responsible for training, equipping, and deploying naval aviation forces; Clyde served in electronic communications and navigation. More specifically, he served as a mission navigator aboard the U.S. Navy’s Super Constellation aircraft. After flying with his crew on many reconnaissance missions, Clyde was honorably discharged from the Navy. He returned to the Appleton area where he was united in marriage to Janet Kay Henke on August 19, 1967 at Appleton Trinity Lutheran Church. He earned his Bachelor’s in Teaching with a minor in Geology from U.W. Oshkosh; later earning a Masters in Earth Science from U.W. Whitewater. He taught for a time in the Waukesha area, later moving to Clintonville in 1976. Clyde taught Earth Sciences at Clintonville Junior High for 36 years, as well as coaching basketball and football, later retiring in 2002. He was an active member of Christus Lutheran Church, Clintonville; also working as custodian there for many years. After retirement, his learning never stopped as he attended geology and Earth science gatherings and events with colleagues and friends. He loved anything to do with the outdoors; trout fishing was one of his favorites, along with deer hunting. He also enjoyed swimming, tennis, bowling, and golf with friends in later years. He was active with the Clintonville Public School Outdoor Science Lab, and also volunteered and helped with projects through the Navarino Nature Center. He never could “sit still,” Clyde always had projects going around the house or in his yard. Time spent with his grandchildren was his top priority, rarely missing their sporting events or concerts. Clyde will be remembered as a friendly, articulate, and caring person who loved his family dearly.
He is survived by his children: Amy (Matt) Thomas, Grayslake, IL; Craig Culbertson, Clintonville; & Lynn (Michael) Relien, Hortonville
Grandchildren: Gabriel Thomas and Jackson & Andrew Relien
Sister: Carol Whitman, Appleton
Clyde was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Janet in 2008; a brother, Calvin Culberston; and granddaughter, Alayna Relien.
Memorial services will be held 11 AM on Monday, February 17, 2025 at Christus Lutheran Church, Clintonville, with the Rev. Shelly Klemp officiating. Inurnment will take place in spring at Appleton Highland Memorial Park. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post #664, American Legion Post #63, and American Legion Auxiliary Unit #63, all of Clintonville, following the service.
Visitation will be held on Monday at the church from 9 AM until the time of service.
