
Leland D. “Butch” Hill, age 83 of Shawano, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday evening, February 1, 2025, in Shawano. Butch was born in Shawano on March 6, 1941, a son of the late Elmer and Alvira (Schreiber) Hill. He attended school in Shawano, graduating from Shawano High School with the Class of 1959. Following high school, Butch moved to Milwaukee and worked in the construction field. In 1963, he enlisted and entered the U.S. Army where he served in Viet Nam with Charlie Company, 1 st Battalion, 18 th Infantry Regiment, and 1 st Infantry Division. Upon returning from service, Butch was employed at Culligan Water in Shawano.
On March 25, 1967, he was united in marriage to the former Jackie Montour at Peace United Church of Christ in Shawano. Butch was employed at Purolator Courier for a number of years before working as the Security Sergeant at the Mohican North Star Casino. He was a proud member of the Oneida Nation, a proud U.S. Veteran, and a proud member of the Veterans of the Oneida Nation. Butch loved spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He had loving and unique connections with each of his children and grandchildren, in his ability to make each feel special. He had an amazing sense of humor and was admired for his kind and generous character. He was an avid reader and enjoyed learning about his cultural heritage. In his younger years he loved trout fishing with his Pa, wood carving, and hunting with his son. Butch is a man of God, and longtime member of St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano.
His memory will be honored and cherished by his wife of 58 years, Jackie Hill, of Shawano; his children, Jamie (Robert) Thiel, Jr. of Shawano, Tony Hill of Shawano, Sarah (Wayne “Putski”) White of Shawano, and Megan (Craig) Bohn of Green Bay; his grandchildren, Nicholas (Desirae) Thiel, Stephanie Thiel, Haley Hill, Ethan Hill, Ava Hill, Emmalee Hill, Derrick (Jessica) White, Kayleen (Steven Aprill) White, Kendra Jean White, Anthony White, Brady Bohn and Lainey Bohn; nine great-grandchildren; his sister Marceline Herrmann; his faithful companion, Miss Pepper the boxer; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Butch was preceded in death by his sister, Ina Rae Krizan; his brother, Darwin Hill; and beloved companion, Ali the boxer.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at 12:00 pm at Mickelson Funeral Service in Shawano. Vicar David Kaiser will officiate. Visitation will begin on Tuesday at 10:00 am and continue until the time of service. Interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano. The Shawano AmVets Post #10 will conduct military honors at the funeral home.
