WAUPACA, WI- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced that Waupaca County will no longer require special burning permits starting at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2024. This decision comes after recent rains and cooler temperatures, which have eased fire danger in the area.
Waupaca County was one of 13 counties under a Special Fire Order, issued on October 15 due to severe drought conditions across the region. The prolonged dry spell had increased fire risk, prompting the DNR to reinstate burn permit requirements as a precautionary measure.
While fire danger has now lessened, the DNR continues to urge Waupaca County residents to exercise caution with any outdoor burning. Officials remind the public that fire risk can change daily, and it’s essential to check with local fire authorities before starting a burn.
Typically, burn permits are required in extensive DNR-protected areas from January 1 through May 31 whenever the ground is not snow-covered. Residents can monitor current fire danger, wildfire activity, and burn restrictions on the DNR’s website.
Alongside Waupaca County, the other area Wisconsin counties where the special burning permit requirement will be lifted include Portage and Waushara counties. Additionally, parts of Oconto County is also affected.
