George H. Carter, age 94 of Clintonville passed away Thursday September 19, 2024 at the ThedaCare Medical Center in New London, surrounded by his family after a long fulfilling life.
Our dad, George was born in his grandparents home in Clintonville on August 23, 1930 to Mabel Laahs and Hudson Carter. Dad was a 1948 graduate of Clintonville High School and shortly after graduating he enlisted and proudly served in the US Navy. He was assigned to the USS Marionette during the Korean War from June 1949 and was honorably discharged in April 1953.
In the summer of 1954 he met Margaret Platt (Mom) in the basement of her family’s butcher shop and were married on October 17, 1954. During their 52 years together they had 3 children: David (Pat), Christine (Todd) Thoma and Peggy (Mark) Tagliapietra. He also has 8 grandchildren: Jeremy (Kyle) Stichman-Horgaty, Kristofor Stichman, Philip (Holly Tody) Stichman, Michael (Alicia) Stichman and Shelby Thoma, Jennifer (Steve Schley) Tagliapietra, Tony (Becca) Tagliapietra and Katie (Justin Mims). Step grandchildren Bradly (Taylor) Thoma and Brandon (Crystal) Thoma. Dad was also survived by a sister Caroline Schmidt. He was also blessed with 21 great grand children who he loved to tease and two very special friends that he’s had for over 80 years, Jeri Kuschel and Orville Noak.
Dad retired from the Post Office in 1992 after 29 years. He and Mom spent most of their retirement traveling back and forth to England until she passed away in 2006. He had many hobbies over the years including wood working and taking walks. Robert Street will look a little lonely now without Dad walking the block once in the morning and then once again in the afternoon. Although you could not tell it by looking at him Dad was a foody, loved to eat. He especially loved a good dessert, any type of a baked bean or deviled eggs. Our family also considered Dad the Clintonville Historian. You could call him and ask him anything about the town and the people in it and he had the answer. Our Dad lived his life the best he knew how and made a big impact on all our lives, he was a kind and gentle man who was a loving person to many, teacher to some and friend to all. While our hearts mourn the loss of our Dad he is no longer suffering and was able to spend final hours saying goodbye to those he loved.
Those waiting to welcome Dad at Heavens door was his wife Margaret, son David, grandson Kristofor, sister Marilyn Wilson and Mammy and George Laahs who raised him from infant on.
A special thanks to the staff at New London Thedacare Hospital, the Hospice team and Doctor Winkel who took such tender loving care of Dad during his final hours.
