SHAWANO, WI- Many residents were without power for a period of time on Tuesday. Shawano Municipal Utilities says it was due to tree branches falling on power lines.
“It was very wide spread around the city and most parts of the city were impacted,” said Bruce Gomm, SMU General Manager. “It was a pretty significant event for power outages.”
He says the main power for most residents was restored by 1:00 a.m.
North of Curt Black Road was extensive damage with trees damaging lines. Later north of town was out for a couple hours after pines trees took out some power lines north of Highway 47.
“The weight of the wet snow was more than the trees could bare and they either fell on the high voltage line and caused the whole circuit to trip out, or they fell on individual lines and ripped them out, causing problems with secondary services.”
Gomm said to his knowledge there were not any injuries.
“When those branches come down, they are wet and that makes them excellent conductors causing short circuits.”
Gomm added that anyone that notices downed lines should contact SMU right away.
