SHAWANO, WI- Ann Retzlaff, the former owner of Annie’s Campground in Gresham, is set to undergo a competency exam as ordered on Monday by Marathon County Judge Michael Moran. Retzlaff, who remains in custody, had requested a reduction in her bond, which was denied by the judge.
Retzlaff is facing two sets of criminal charges, the first stemming from a May 2021 traffic stop in Shawano County. Additional charges were added following an April 20 arrest related to missed court appearances, with an extra bail jumping charge for allegedly traveling to Michigan without permission. A trial for the initial traffic stop charges, including fleeing an officer, is scheduled for Jan. 23.
The second set of charges, in Sauk County, accuses Retzlaff of filing illegal liens against individuals involved in the foreclosure of Annie’s Campground. No court dates for the Sauk County case have been set as of now.
During the court proceedings on Monday, Judge Moran approved a competency exam for Retzlaff in relation to the Shawano County cases. The psychiatric evaluation aims to determine her understanding of the court proceedings and her ability to assist in her own defense.
Retzlaff, seeking a reduction in her cash bonds totaling over $50,000, asked for “mercy” from the court. However, Judge Moran, citing her extended period of being “unavailable” to the court, declined to address the issue.
In the original case, Retzlaff evaded a traffic stop on May 15, 2021, resulting in spiked tires and her eventual arrest. Allegedly confrontational with officers during the arrest, additional charges were filed. After missing a court hearing in January, a warrant was issued, and she was arrested in August. The cash bond for these cases now stands at $57,000, with a trial scheduled for Jan. 23.
Ann Retzlaff, formerly the owner of Annie’s Campground, saw the property sold at auction to address mortgage and tax debts. The legal proceedings continue, and residents are advised to stay informed about further developments in the case.
