SHAWANO, WI- Shawano Community Middle School honored Veterans on Thursday.
The celebration started with a Veterans Breakfast in the Middle School commons. It was made free for veterans in attendance.
The ceremony continued with an assembly that included speeches by Retired Colonel Richard Kucksdorf and Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez.
“I was part of the first freshman class in this building back in 1968 and I played up here on the stage with the band.”
Kucksdorf talked to the Middle School students about history.
“Veterans did not serve for awards and glory,” he said. “Veterans are selfless.”
Lt. Governor Rodriguez took time to thank all of the Veterans who were in attendance.
“For all the veterans here, even if your family does not tell you all time, they are so very proud of you.”
The thrilling highlight of the day was the landing of a Black Hawk helicopter on the Middle School grounds. The landing of this iconic military aircraft was a rare and exciting opportunity for
our community to get up close and personal with a piece of our nation’s military history.
In addition to the Black Hawk helicopter, there were other static displays available,
showcasing military equipment and vehicles.
