SHAWANO, WI- Nitrogen management decision making in a farm field is one of the most impactful decisions which farms make. Yield, crop quality, and profitability are usually driven by having the appropriate amount and timing availability of nitrogen to the crop. Ground water quality is also directly impacted if a farm uses too much nitrogen, or at a time when the crop can’t utilize the nitrogen completely. New tools and options, such as the use of bacterial products which help plants capture nitrogen, may help, but are they worth their price?
A field day is being held on Thursday, October 5 to help farms in their nitrogen management decision making. UW-Madison, Division of Extension Crops/Soils Educator Scott Reuss is conducting in-field research comparing multiple nitrogen rates, nitrogen management strategies, and how corn yield responds to the use of two different bacterial products across a range of nitrogen rates. One of these research plots is the site of the field day, hosted by Bulger Farms. The event will take place in the corn field located at the northwest corner of the junction of Shawano Cty. Hwy’s BB and E, just west of Green Valley. Parking will be off Cty. BB, look for signs.
The event begins at 10:45 a.m. with registration. Beginning at 11, the plots will be featured along with 2022 results/findings. Nitrogen management strategies for Northeastern WI fields will be reviewed and discussed by Reuss and UW Nutrient and Pest Management staff. The role and proper use of cover crops to assist in nitrogen management will also be discussed.
Lunch and door prizes for this free event are being sponsored by YieldMaster Solutions. After lunch, there will be time for attendee questions about any aspect of nitrogen or other nutrient management issues facing farms in the region, as well as the proper methods to utilize new techniques and tools available to farms’ nitrogen strategies.
Pre-registration is requested to ensure accurate meal counts for the event, but walk-ins will be welcome. Pre-register by contacting Reuss via text/call to 715-701-0966 or email to scott.reuss@wisc.edu The UW-Madison, Division of Extension offices of Langlade, Marinette, Oconto, and Shawano Counties are hosting this event.
