CLINTONVILLE, WI- Residents were greeted with an unusual sight Friday morning as reports of a juvenile black bear wandering within city limits circulated. While black bears are generally non-aggressive, authorities are urging citizens to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines to ensure the bear’s safe and peaceful return to its natural habitat.
The appearance of the young bear is believed to be related to its search for food, typical behavior for wildlife in urban areas. In response to this sighting, local officials have issued several safety recommendations:
- Do Not Leave Food Outside: Residents are urged not to leave old or discarded food items outside, as these can attract bears and other wildlife.
- Secure Pet Food: Keep pet food secured indoors to prevent any potential encounters between your pets and the bear.
- Proper Garbage Disposal: Ensure that garbage containers are securely closed and only placed outside on designated pick-up days.
The bear, known for its climbing abilities, may take refuge in trees or explore residential yards. If residents encounter the bear and find it to be a nuisance, they are encouraged to report the sighting to local authorities. Efforts will be made to safely relocate the bear out of the city and back into its natural habitat.
Authorities strongly advise against attempting to approach, provoke, or poke the bear in any way, as this can lead to unpredictable and potentially dangerous behavior. Instead, residents are advised to maintain a safe distance and observe the bear from a secure location.
