CLINTONVILLE, WI- The Clintonville School District is looking for some ideas to fix some traffic backup issues during student drop-0ff and pickup. The issues have started taking place since Clintonville Middle School is now part of the same building as the high school after the recent renovation project.
Superintendent Troy Kuhn told the Clintonville School Board about the issues, gave some ideas and asked for more.
“When we designed the middle school, high school and the elementary, we designed it so buses would always be on one side building and student pick-up would be on the other side of the building, so students would never have to walk between busses,” Kuhn said. He said the area of Greentree Road was always a concern.
In past years, the district has had discussions with the county about making Greentree Road and dead end road, but those discussions also hit a dead end.
Kuhn said on the first day of school, vehicles were backed up onto Greentree Road and all the way to State Highway 22. He said they went to work on fixing that right away. “That can’t happen,” Kuhn said.
The next day, the district had SRO Tyler Bartel direct parents into different areas of the student parking lot. Kuhn told the board that it worked better, but it still was not perfect.
One issue that needs to be looked at is students crossing the pick-up lanes to get to the student parking lot. When vehicles stopped to allow students to cross, it slowed down the whole process.
One suggestion was to make the pick-up lanes one-way traffic, having students avoid certain areas or having parents park along the football field. He said these options would require people working these locations and they would need to be able to radio with the buses.
“We’re all open to suggestions if you guys have any ideas of what we can do,” Kuhn said. “Just remember, I want people in safety vests with walkie-talkies, etc. The last thing I want is a bus accident or a kid hit by a car. And worst of all would be one of our kids being hit by a bus.”
One board member stated that he noticed the congestion in the morning and afternoon and was shocked that nobody was run over yet. Kuhn said some suggestions he received included building more parking lots in green spaces.
