KESHENA, WI- This week Menominee Tribe is focusing on educating the tribal public about our rules of riding, registering your ATV, using required safety equipment and gear, and knowing where to ride.
Safety is of most importance and the primary message from Menominee Tribe. In addition, following the rules of riding is expected. Menominee Tribe has ATV laws specific to operating off-highway vehicles on our Reservation lands.
Chapter 550 Vehicles and traffic Article IV All-terrain Vehicles was adopted and effective on August 20, 1997, and was amended in 2010. It was created to establish a statutory base for regulation of all-terrain vehicles within the exterior boundaries of the Menominee Indian Reservation.
The law requires that these all-terrain vehicles be registered with the Menominee Licensing and Permits and the owner of the ATV can be cited if the ATV is being driven and it is not registered.
They are located at Tribal Office Loop Road in the FIC building (newer white and red/brown building) in the lower level. Licensing and Permits can be reached at 715-799-5121 if you have further questions.
Only those 12 and over may operate an ATV. Those between the ages 12 and 16 must have successfully completed an approved all-terrain vehicle safety course to operate an ATV. Any operator under the age of 18 must be wearing a protective helmet while operating an ATV.
ATV’s can be operated adjacent to a roadway and operated at a distance 10 feet or more from the paved roadway along U.S, numbered highways, state and county highways, tribal roads, town roads and BIA roads. Roadway speed limits shall be observed when traveling adjacent to the roadway.
ATV’s must be equipped with lighted headlights and taillight if operated during the hours of darkness or operated during daylight hours on any highway right of way. ATV’s must be equipped with at least one brake operated wither by hand or foot.
ATV’s must be equipped with a functioning muffler to prevent excessive or unusual noise. They must be outfitted with a commercially manufactured bolt-on apparatus designed to allow for a passenger.
