SHAWANO, WI – While the WIAA Spring Sports season looks like a longshot to happen, the summer sports season is now on the discussion table.
Shawano Youth League season would have already normally gotten underway with team formations, parent meetings, and indoor practices.
“We were waiting to see what the Governor was going to do with the Stay at Home order that would have expired on the 24th, but now we have to meet again.”
Youth League President Tony Stuber says that is because the Governor’s order getting extending through the end of May, hacks off about half of the league season and will start interfering with tournaments.
Stuber says Tournaments start in the first week of June and he does not know if those tournaments will be canceled.
“It is going to hinge upon what other organizations do as well.”
He says while everything is still on hold, the board will need to discuss options coming up.
“We have to look to see if there is a way to get things back to somewhat of a normalcy and we can still get kids out on the field this year, that is our goal, but we have to look for safety first.”
The league season usually finishes at the end of June or early July and Stuber says the board will have to consider if they possibly want the league to continue on into July.
Right now, all options are on the table, but he says the main goal is to get the kids out on the field when it is safe.
While Stuber did not say that league season has a priority over tournament ball, he says they always want to get as many kids that want to play the chance to play, which league play does.
He says there is a chance that many of the tournaments that are scheduled will get canceled which would not give Shawano an option to have many tournament opportunities.
As of now, Shawano Youth League has not canceled its own hosted July Tournament weekend schedule.
