WITTENBERG, WI – A two-headed goat was born at Nueske’s Farms in Shawano County.
The rare site was found after one of the goats gave and then gave quite the surprise, according to Carrie Nueske.
“My daughter was helping the mother and thought there were two coming at once but then realized that she could not get her hands in between the two heads,” she explained. “We have never seen one before, and it seems like it is pretty rare.”
She says the goat heads are doing some things at the same time and other things it is not able to do at the same time.
“They both are able to eat, and we noticed that if one sucks, the other one sucks at the same time,” Nueske said. “It is like they are doing the same thing at the same time, but yet one can cry and the other one can’t at the same time.”
The situation has led to the family doing some learning along the way.
“There is one body and everything else seems to be normal, it just seems to be the head that is split.”
Carrie says she does not know if the goat has one or two brains.
“It is a normal baby, it just has two heads so we are doing all of the same things that we do with all of our other babies.”
Some of the initial trouble areas are literally holding its “heads” up.
“It is kind of front-heavy, so it can’t stand on its own yet and we are not sure if it is going to be able to do that.”
Unfortunately, animals in a situation like that are not given much of a chance of survival, according to Nueske, but she says there is always hope.
“The baby probably won’t last more than a few days so we are just waiting out this phase to see how it goes.”
They decided to name him Janus (jay-nes) after the Greek god of beginnings, transitions, time, duality, and endings.
She says their Facebook page got lots of views once they posted it.
