There could be some changes coming for the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin. The tribes legislature is removing police chief Mark Waukau from office. A special meeting of the tribal legislature was held Monday, and Waukau may still appeal the action. The tribe is also considering changing their name to Menominee Nation. The tribe already uses the phrase Menominee Nation in many areas, such as with the College of the Menominee Nation, or sponsorship of the Menominee Nation Arena in Oshkosh. However, the tribe’s Constitution must be changed for it to be the legal name. The tribal legislature votes Tuesday on approving the referendum. If that happens, ballots will be mailed out. Votes are expected to be tallied by Nov. 5.
