Arlene Ann Buelow, age 98, a resident of Oakhaven Assisted Living in Shawano, went to her Heavenly Home on Thursday, January 12, 2017.
Arlene Ann Ruth Schumacher was born on July 22, 1918 in the Town of Richmond, Shawano County, to the late Hugo and Hulda (Kroenke) Schumacher. She was baptized and confirmed by Rev. Peter F. Cassens at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Stony Hill, Town of Richmond. Arlene attended Red River School and graduated from Shawano High School in 1937. She was employed at Woolworths in Shawano for five years. Arlene enjoyed ice skating and bowling. She loved to dance at Pleshek’s Pavilion, where she met her future husband, Elmer H. Buelow.
On December 25, 1941, six months after meeting, Elmer and Arlene were united in marriage at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. Rev. Walter M. Schroth performed the marriage ceremony. They were married 50 years before Elmer passed away on June 8, 1992. God blessed Arlene with strength as she lovingly cared for her husband.
Arlene enjoyed farming with Elmer on the Buelow Homestead. Their son, Roger, was a partner in the farming operation. Interestingly, Arlene wore boy’s high top leather shoes to support her ankles. She loved farming, even though it was hard work. In September, 1990, the couple moved to an apartment in Shawano. Elmer passed away one year and nine months later. Arlene continued to live in the apartment for 23 more years before moving to The Cottages Assisted Living where she lived for 16 months. She then moved to Paisers Oakhaven Assisted Living. She enjoyed frequent visits with friends and family in the nursing homes.
Arlene was a true Packer fan. She enjoyed playing Sheepshead with friends and family, and the game of Sequence with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Reading was another hobby of hers. Arlene was fascinated with twins; her father was a twin, her husband was a twin, and she and Elmer were blessed with twin daughters. Arlene was thrilled to have twin great-grandchildren, now 4 ½ years old.
Arlene will always be remembered for her smile. Her family will forever cherish her loving kindness. Arlene trusted God with her worries, and thanked Him for her blessings. Her longevity may very well have been due to her hard work and positive outlook on life. She was blessed with a happy spirit. She was a good listener and gave words of encouragement and advice when asked.
Arlene was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Town of Washington, Bonduel, where she willingly helped whenever needed. She lived her faith. Her kindness was reflected in simply helping others. Arlene walked humbly and steadfastly with the Lord her entire life. She drove to her country church, even in her 80’s, and graciously brought two elderly church ladies along. She was also a member of the Ladies Aid. Arlene was the oldest member of the congregation. She was grateful Pastor Pockat visited her frequently, comforting her with his prayers and giving her Communion regularly.
Survivors include her three children, twins Janice Nault of Green Bay and Jane (Larry) Luepke of Shawano, and Roger (Lana) Buelow of Shawano; seven grandchildren, Amy (Karth) Barr of Cary, IL, Jason (Elizabeth Wallace) Wartman of Leawood, KS, Andrea (Mark) Fergus of Green Bay, Jana (Zachary) Graf of DePere, Dorothy (Derek) Putz of Shawano, Allison (Patrick) Rafferty of Green Bay and Jed Wartman of Green Bay; 13 great-grandchildren, Bennett and Peyton Barr, Nicholas, Twins Luke and Caroline Wallace, Sophia and Owen Fergus, Tyler, Stefen and Lillianna Graf, Corbin and Baelyan Putz, and Jayden Wartman. She is further survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Rev. Leonard (Carola) Buelow of Green Bay; and a special niece, Lee Ann Buelow, now of SC, who visited her Auntie Arlene frequently; and many nieces and nephews.
Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; her brother Harvey Schumacher; her sister, Mabel, who died of influenza at the age of two; an infant grandson, Baby Buelow, who passed away shortly after birth on September 6, 1972; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Minnie (Hugo) Werbelow, Adolph (Edna) Buelow, Harold (Anita) Buelow, Harry (Irma) Buelow, Alfred (Florence) Buelow, Myrtle (Arnold) Moede, Henry Buelow, and Henrietta (Lester) Meyer.
